What moves gold (XAU/USD)

The real drivers behind the XAU/USD price.

A move is a distance between two prices. What causes it is the subject of this page.

Gold (XAU/USD) does not move at random. The main forces are the US dollar, real interest rates, inflation, central-bank buying and safe-haven demand. Once you can read them, the price makes sense.

Watch how each factor pushes XAU/USD: a stronger dollar usually weighs on it, while risk-off flows and easier policy tend to support it. Use the position-size calculator to trade these moves within a fixed risk.

FAQ

Common questions

What actually drives the XAU/USD price day to day?

Real interest rates and US dollar strength drive most of the day-to-day move in XAU/USD. Gold pays no yield, so when returns on cash and bonds rise the metal usually feels heavier, and when they fall it tends to attract buyers. Central bank buying and physical demand add a slower layer underneath.

How much does a 0.01 move in gold matter to my position?

On gold one pip is 0.01, and one standard lot is 100 oz, so a 0.01 move is worth one US dollar per standard lot. A 0.10-lot position therefore moves about ten cents per pip. Use our pip value calculator to convert that into AED before you size a trade.

Why does gold react so sharply to US data releases?

Gold reacts sharply to US data because the metal is priced against the dollar and competes with dollar cash. Inflation, employment and rate-decision releases shift expectations for future interest rates, and those expectations reprice gold within seconds. Thin liquidity around the release usually widens the gap between where you expect to trade and where you actually get filled.

Does gold always rise when there is geopolitical tension?

No, gold does not always rise on geopolitical tension. Safe-haven buying is real but it competes with dollar demand, rate expectations and existing positioning, so a headline that looks alarming can still be sold. Treat geopolitics as one input that changes volatility, not as a directional signal you can rely on.

Where can I see the levels gold traders are watching?

Use our pivot points calculator to see the reference levels many traders track for gold across sessions. Keep in mind that a level is only a place where attention clusters, not a prediction. Around a price near 4275.0 the distance between neighbouring levels matters more than the level itself, so check it against current volatility.
